I'm a twenty-something journalist covering Chicago area news online and in print.

I love the Chicago White Sox, Hawkeye football, and the Orlando Magic, in no particular order. Besides writing, I love fashion, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

My blog posts aren't endorsements, just items I find quirky or interesting. Enjoy!

Heartbreaking read from one of my colleagues:

(via www.chicagotribune.com) Their paths crossed on a Sunday afternoon: a Darien father driving his two young sons to Olive Garden, and a 14-year-old eighth-grader biking home to Downers Grove for family dinner.

Suddenly there was a bump, driver Timothy Hagan told police.

Moments later, Hunter Himes lay trapped below the undercarriage, breathing but unconscious. Hagan, visibly upset, immediately called 911 while two nurses stopped to help before emergency crews arrived. Hagan told police he hadn’t seen the teen until after he accelerated and realized he had run over something, according to the report filed on the February accident.

The 30-year-old point guard on Friday informed the Magic that he would not exercise his player option for the 2012-13 season.

The move ensured he will become an unrestricted free agent when the NBA’s free agency period begins on Sunday. Nelson wants to sign a multiyear deal to return to the Magic, but he has no guarantee that will occur.

“You play for a team for eight years and not a lot of guys can say that, so it’s difficult,” Nelson told the Orlando Sentinel on Friday night. “I have a comfort level there; obviously, that plays a part as well. I’m not saying I won’t come back or we won’t reach a deal. At this point, I have to make another decision after the decision I just made.

“I would love to re-sign with Orlando. I would love to. I have to make the best decision — what’s best for myself and my family. But I want to continue to be a Magic player and be affiliated with the organization and the DeVos family and everything they’re about.”

(via www.reuters.com) A Miami man fatally shot by police after he refused to stop gnawing on another man’s face may have been under the influence of a new form of the 1960s hallucinatory drug LSD, a top police officer said on Wednesday.

Police are investigating the ghoulish weekend incident involving 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, who was found naked and chewing on the face and neck of his victim on the off-ramp of a bridge in downtown Miami.

Police shot and killed Eugene when he failed to respond to orders to stop and back away.

The Willis High School junior, who helps support two siblings, has both a full time and part-time job. She said that she’s often too tired to go to school.

“She goes from job to job from school,” Devin Hill, one of Tran’s classmates, told KHOU-11. “She stays up until 7:00 in the morning doing her homework.”

(via www.chicagotribune.com) A 19-year-old Chicago man was held in lieu of $1 million bail today after prosecutors and police allege he participated in the fatal stabbing of a 39-year-old man.

Anfernee McCormick, of the 3500 block of West Douglas Boulevard, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Dorsey Liberty, who was beaten with a metal curling bar and stabbed 14 times on April 19 in the North Lawndale neighborhood, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jen Hamelly.

At the time, police said Liberty was stabbed after he fell while trying to escape an attacker on the 3500 block of West Douglas Boulevard. Liberty was with a friend, who managed to escape, but later returned and found the 39-year-old.

I have a strong belief that the leadership in the town is grossly incompetent and is only concerned about funding the pocketbooks of family and friends.

(via chicagotribune.com) At Maine East High School in Park Ridge, students in Jennifer Conlon’s current affairs class are researching all things NATO, from its origins to its accomplishments to the issues that now trouble each member nation.

Most of the teens admitted they hadn’t really grasped what the group of nations actually does or how it operates. That should change within a week, when the class holds a mock summit, with each student representing a NATO country, and as students watch the actual summit unfold in their proverbial backyard.

“I think it’s cool they picked Chicago, but I want to know how the (organization) helps the world,” said Marwa Musleh, 17, of Niles.

(via abcnews.com) A self-described “plus sized” college student who was told she was “obviously pregnant” and “not pretty enough” to dance on a platform in a bar in Iowa is claiming she was discriminated against by the bar’s bouncers.

Jordan Ramos, a 21-year-old University of Iowa student said she went to Union Bar in Iowa City, Iowa with her friends on March 3. She said she tried to get onto a platform where several of her friends were dancing, but was stopped by the bouncer, who said they were at capacity.

Ramos said she waited until a few girls left, and again tried to go up. She was stopped again, which she said prompted her to ask, “What is the difference between the other girls up there and myself?”

(via www.chicagotribune.com) Chicagoans and tourists soon will no longer be able to visit Michigan Avenue for a chance to take a picture with pop culture icon Marilyn Monroe.

The Forever Marilyn sculpture that stands in Pioneer Court will be removed Monday, the nonprofit group that owns the statue has announced.
