1978 was a Year of Three Popes; John Paul II’s predecessor, John Paul I, was pope for only 33 days.

(via www.nytimes.com) For a select group of Catholics, the news most eagerly awaited from the conclave of cardinals gathering in Rome to elect a new pope is less about who that man is than how big. They are the craftsmen of Ditta Annibale Gammarelli, papal tailors since the 18th century.

Immediately after Pope Benedict XVI announced his plans to retire, the craftsmen at Gammarelli set to work on their challenging Goldilocks task. Already, in a snug, wood-paneled two-story shop on a side street near the Pantheon in Rome and in an area that is to clerical garb what Madison Avenue is to Armani and Prada, the master cutters and tailors have gone about making three sets of papal garments, in sizes small, medium and large. None of the likely current candidates, as it happens, is any heftier than that. Pope John XXIII, who died in 1963, was the last pontiff to wear an XL

(via www.washingtonpost.com) When the call came, it took Elly Lafkin a few minutes to realize that the voice sobbing incomprehensibly into the phone was her infant daughter’s babysitter. She was telling Lafkin to rush to Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.

By the time Lafkin arrived the morning of May 17, emergency medical workers had been giving her daughter CPR for 35 minutes. They’d shot epinephrine into her thigh four times and had tried again and again to restart her daughter’s heart, still no bigger than a walnut, with defibrillator paddles.

At the hospital, Lafkin pleaded with the doctors to not give up. “I screamed, ‘You can’t stop!’ ” she remembers. “ ‘You have to keep trying!’ ”

But at 12:27 p.m., they called Camden Lafkin’s death. She was 13 weeks and two days old.

(via www.newyorktimes.com) Every generation has its own anthem of making the journey from youthful naïveté to adult reality, whether it’s Neil Young’s “Old Man,” Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or most recently, perhaps, the Taylor Swift song “22.”

“Tonight’s the night when we forget about the deadlines,” it goes. “It feels like one of those nights, we won’t be sleeping.”

If only it were as easy for Ms. Swift’s less affluent contemporaries to blow off their deadlines as it is for the singer-songwriter (now a slightly more seasoned 23). Sleepless nights are more likely because they are on the clock, not at the club.
